Virtue Restaurant & Bar is a Black-owned Southern American restaurant in Chicago’s Hyde Park neighborhood, known for its thoughtful approach to Southern cooking, warm hospitality, and celebration of Black food culture. Opened in 2018 by chef and owner Erick Williams, Virtue combines traditional Southern flavors with contemporary culinary techniques in a welcoming dining environment.

The restaurant’s menu draws inspiration from Southern food traditions, family recipes, and the cultural history behind familiar dishes. Guests can enjoy favorites such as gumbo with chicken and andouille sausage, blackened catfish, fish and grits, braised short ribs, and cornbread served with honey butter. Side dishes including collard greens with smoked turkey, macaroni and cheese, and stone-ground grits complement the main courses.

Virtue’s dining room offers an inviting setting for date nights, celebrations, business dinners, and gatherings with friends and family. The restaurant also features a bar serving cocktails, wine, and other beverages, along with weekday happy hour offerings.

Chef Erick Williams brings extensive fine-dining experience and a commitment to preserving and sharing the stories behind Southern cuisine. In 2022, he received the James Beard Award for Best Chef: Great Lakes, becoming the first Black chef to win the award in that category.

Beyond the restaurant, Williams founded Virtue Leadership Development, a nonprofit initiative that provides young adults of color with opportunities to develop leadership and entrepreneurial skills through hospitality industry training.

Virtue also accommodates private dining events, including seated dinners, receptions, and corporate gatherings.

Located along Hyde Park’s 53rd Street dining corridor, Virtue Restaurant & Bar offers a distinctive Chicago dining experience that brings together Southern culinary traditions, contemporary cooking, and a commitment to community.
